How do i stop acctive connections which are shown in netstat?

when i type in netstat in the cmd , it comes up showing about 30 connections , its making my internet run very slow and i do not know how to stop this , i phoned up sky and they said it could be programs running in my background but they did not tell me what i could do. if anybody could help this would be great
