How to delete everything on the hard drive?

I tried using the CMD code format c:\ something like that I used several alternatives like format c:/ or format c:. I did one code and then it said something like " Warning this will delete and erase everything on the hard drive would you like to continue?" Then I clicked no because I am afraid this will delete my operating system? Is there another way to do it without deleting the operating system.
