Can you self-study high school chemistry,then take AP chemistry and do well?

Just wondering as I plan for high school. Can I buy a high school chem book to read and study, go on the website and print out worksheets, chapter review stuff, etc., do all the book questions as well and be ok with AP chem..the pre-req doesnt say regular chem is needed, just highly suggested and a summer packet is given prior to course. I heard regular chem is a lot of Algebra, and thats my strongest subject so will it work?
